View Full Version : Evo 1-3 needs Ostrich and Tunerpro... and?

Hello,

ive been a lurker for about a few weeks and now its time for me to be an active member of the community :>

from what i understood out of reading this section, Evo 1-3 ECU can be slightly programmable using the Ostrich cable and tunerpro software... is there anything else needed? please dont tell me i have to solder a chip on the ecu first or something :(

i have a 4g93T on a 1983 mitsubishi lancer. as you know, this engine is very similiar to early 4g63's... shares alot in common.

i've been meaning to swap its ECU to an evo 7-8 ECU using evonut270's guide. but for the time being, an evo 3 ECU plugs just right in without any necessary modifications.

so, tell me people, what is exactly necessary to get an evo 3 ecu to swap ROMS and play with?


p.s: can i use openport 2.0 from tactrix to flash evo 3 ecu? what other programs or cables can i use?

You need an ostrich emulator (not cable) available from moates.net for $175 and tuner pro. AFAIK that's all you need. Andy will correct me if I'm wrong.

You will unfortunately need to solder a DIP (Dual Inline Pin) socket to the ECU. All the Ostrich does is emulate an EEPROM to save you constantly taking chips in and out to program them over and over after making small changes. The Ostrich allows you to just map the car as normal, then once finished you can either remove the Ostrich, burn the final ROM to an EEPROM and fit it to the ECU or you can leave the Ostrich plugged in for good and means you won't have to re-fit it every time you want to map your car.

However, you WILL need to solder. I'de be more than happy to do the solder work for you mate, providing someone can give me a link on what needs to be soldered where.

Andy will be along with more info for you, but that's the jist of it. :smile:

HermaN hit it right on the line.
i do not have the ostrich setup, so i go the more tedious way of writing and re-writing and re-writing ROMS...
if you really want to tune, you may also need a wideband set up to check your fuel map modifications.
a datalogger (i use an old Palm pilot with the MMCd software installed) is quite necessary as well to log.
no need for the open port yet, until to use the later Evo ECUs...

You can also go down this method, but if you do, I recommend fitting a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket if going down that route instead of a DIP to prevent having to use any force to fit & remove the chip, possibly damaging something.

A ZIF is not a must-have, but just recommended if you don't want to use Ostrich.

i guess its cheaper and easier in the long run to just get an evo 5+ ecu and map it with openport & ecuflash.

im located in the middle east but im movin back to california in less than a week...
