View Full Version : Newbie here looking to learn how to self tune my Evo V RS
Hi everyone. I've been recommended to join this site by a member off MLR.
I'm looking to mod my V RS. I'm in the reseach phase but right now I fancy the idea of fitting a IX 80 turbo and tune using an Evo VII ECU and ECUflash. My thoughts are that I'd like to take the car to a safe tune on stock internals.
I would like to learn how to self tune my car hopefully with guidence from someone who knows what they're doing. That's why I'm here!
I haven't bought any parts needed yet and my car is stock apart from a Kakimoto cat back, APS BOV and Greddy boost gauge.
Right now I'm looking to source and buy the Evo VII ECU and Tactrix cable.
OK that's about it!
I'd appreciate any help anyone has on the subject.
Cheers!

Hi Kins,
The IX 80 maybe a little more than you need on a stock V bottom end. What turbo do you have fitted at the minute (serial number)?

Leave it with me gray I shall have a butchers.
Gray - I've tried to have a look at the Turbo and I can't see the serial number on the side of the turbo without removing things to get to it. I'm pretty sure it's the stock turbo that was fitted to the car.
Were there different turbo's fitted to the V RS's?
What sort of power can I extract from a stocker, reliably?
Can I max it out without needing to go forged internals?
Also would a US Evo VIII ECU be suitable for self tuning or would a Evo VII Ecu be better?
Please can someone point me in the right direction to someone who sells Tactrix cables. How much should I be paying?
Cheers,
Karl

I would stick to getting an Evo 7 ECU mate and Grants620 on the MLR sells cables, wideband meters etc:smile:
Reliable stock block hp will be around 360 ish....you don't really want to run it past 1.5 bar.
Cheers

Fuel pump an absolute must....3 inch d/pipe, decat and cat back exhaust (I love the Blitz NUR spec even tho it's pricey and does shrink below 3 inches in a couple of places)...a good induction and hardpipe kit (HKS Racing Suction Kit for example)....a bloody good remap:>

I already have a Kakimoto cat back and I'm very happy with it. I hear the Blitz is LOUD! lol
I'm looking at picking up a 3" down pipe decat and turbo elbow.
Fuel pump is on the list. - I'm thinking walbro 255lph.
Induction - Not sure if I'll need this. I'd sooner run a standard airbox if I can. I have a Apexi panel filter fitted. If I'm struggling for air flow then I'd go induction pipe and HUGE K&N and relocate the battery.
Bloody good remap - that's where fitting a VII ECU and learning off here comes in! :D
I need to find an ECU so if anyone see's one please PM me.
Do I need a boost controller? Or just keep can I just keep it fixed on the flash?
What about cams?

Standard airbox is a little on the restrictive side and the pipe from box to turbo is a bit squishy but ok for 1.5 bar:smile:
I personally would fit an AVCR boost controller but you could control the boost with a 3 port solenoid and the Evo 7 ECU if you wanted to.
Some cams would improve things....a set of 264's would improve mid range torque no end if mapped correctly:thumbup1:

It should be a 4 plug ECU...
Hi guys,
How good is the stock E5 ECU for mapping? I know alot of people are buying E7 ECU's so they can have launch control, pops and bangs etc but doesn't all that fcuk the turbo? :confused1:
I'm getting a 3" turbo elbow decat and downpipe made up from Solid Fab off MLR.
I was going to uprade the fuel pump and fit a boost controller after this. Do you think it's worth tuning it after that to see what I can extract?
When I've had chance to save up so $$ I'd like to buy a stroker kit so I can support something like a s205, fp red or 3076 (undecided at present)
Do you think a stock 5ecu will be ok for what I have in mind.
Basically I'm trying to sort out a modification plan, can you offer any guidence in terms of what mods to do, when to fit and tuning stages.
Many thanks for your help in advance!

Karl,
Std ECU will be fine.
Probably the simplest option for starters would be to reflash it with the Ralliart ECU and tweak the boost levels. That should see you around 350ish at 1.5 bar.
Then you can give the map a bit more of a tweak to get a little bit extra ;)

Thanks for the reply Andy. Would I need a boost controller for this or could I control the boost from the ECU? I assume a fuel pump is a must to do this?
Hi guys, just resurrecting my thread. Just a little update. Solidfab never made me the exhaust parts so this is a bit of a let down. I've booked my car in on with RSE next sat to have a downpipe and decat fitted that + my Kakimoto cat back should sort me out exhaust wise for now.
After these have been fitted I'd like to do a "geek map" hehe.
I have a cheeky request: Can anyone loan me a taxtrix cable for a V ECU?
Putting the ralliart flash on it sounds like a good plan. 350ish ponies sounds good to me until I can save for forged internalls and a turbokit :D
Andy - I've sent you a PM on MLR mate.
Please help me Geek Map my car :D :D :D
Thanks

Karl,
If you're only in Chester then you can borrow my cable to flash the map over if you want. Or alternatively if you want to pop over to Warrington then I can do it for you and then give it a quick check afterwards to make sure it's running fine.
Also, the boost can be controlled via the ECU.
Cheers

Like The Killers song "Andy, you're a star"!
If you don't mind me popping over that would be great. :)
What beer do you drink? You've earned a case :)
Thanks a lot mate!
Would you recommend that I fit an uprated fuel pump before we do any flashing?:>
Please PM me a time that's good for you and a contact number.
Thanks again.

I have my 3" downpipe and decat fitted now.
Andy please can you PM me what day would be convenient for you to help me. I can pop over pretty much anytime so please let me know when's best for you.
Thanks a million.

I have a question... see here please http://www.geekmapped.com/forums/showthread.php?t=905
More questions! :D
I'm also confused what to buy to control boost. Am I best getting a 3 port boost controller rather than a mbc or ebc?
Gauge wise I'm also debating what is the best approach. My car has a Greddy 60mm boost gauge but it's not working... I'm not sure really as I'm a bit lost with electronics. I don't know if it just need hooking up correctly or if it's knackered.
What gauges would you recommend for geekmapping? Boost and Air-Fuel ratio?
What are peoples recommendations and where can I buy from?
Thanks for everyones help.

For boost, personally I would get a Gizzmo MS-IBC, not only will it let you increase boost levels, but it can also act as a digital boost gauge, so 2 birds with 1 stone. :D
As for AFR's, if you want a perminant set-up, get an LM-1 & a gauge. Everything (boost controller & LM-1 + gauge) can be bought from Grant620 on here or MLR.
Also, you can order from his site.... http://www.gb-ent.com/
