Hi Guys,

I have been a mechanic/engineer for fast approaching 20 years now, and I think I have a basic idea on the " other side " of the mechanicals, ie tuning/mapping, but my knowledge is limited and would like to know more :)

I would like to get into the geekmapping side of things and I'm not one of those up-there-own-bums mechanics who think they know it all etc etc, I love to learn and im always open to learning, listening and more importantly, understanding, new skills.

So, for a complete newbie so to speak, where do I start

Im on MLR and own an 8 btw

Thanks in advance !

Paul

if you want to do remapping, you will need the following:-
laptop, id say netbook as it has a better battery life than normal laptops - 200
tactrix open port 2.0 lead, there is a cheaper 1.3u lead which is about 80, but defo get 2.0 - 175
lm1 wideband o2 sensor + clamp to monitor and record afr - 250
evoscan sodtware - 15
ecuflash - free
det cans - you can probly make these, theres threads on here or mlr of how to make them

I would start by reading this guide (http://forums.evolutionm.net/ecuflash/302895-how-tune-evo.html). That's how I basically got started. Printed that off and just sat and read it until I fully understood it, then found more info and started reading, then got a wideband, EvoScan, Open Port 2.0, etc and started to make changes to the fuel map only at first. I began to read and understand more about timing, then started to make small changes to that as well, and as you go on and gain more and more experience from doing more cars you just tend to pick up new methods, and you get quicker and better at getting the most out of the car without pushing it too far.

All about constantly reading up on new info, then putting it into practice. The more you read and the more you put into practice the better you'll become. Hope that helps mate. :>

Once I think I'm getting there there's always something new that pops up then I have to start again, probably why the mapping side appeals so much

Haha, No problem. Spent most of the day reading yesterday. Had a sore head before bed last night.

I think I pretty much understand the fuelling side of things now. Downloaded a few maps I found on here and had a flick through the software. Setting rev limits/Static rev limits etc are a doddle. I think I know how to do negative timing (Although I wouldn't like to try ) Still not quite happy with the timing side of things really. Hopefully get more reading today though
