With regard to the above chipset, whats its limitations or perhaps better still 'can it be flashed'??
Were these off anything rather than 6.5's because Im being told that they were also from 5's which Im a liitle dubious about

I did a 5 with one , only pops and bangs but caused me a headache until I was put right on here . I believe they can be mapped as normal

Nice one.....I have been asked to look at one on a 5 also but Im still a little hesitant to be honest as especially over the years many off here have said stay clear of them as they will fry

They are fine these days, I use to have many doorstops made from these model processor ECU's.

Is there a way to identify the chip without opening the ECU?

No, but what I tend to do is download the rom and save it. I then change 1 fuel cell by 1 afr and try and flash it back in.
If you get the error code come up I will then change the xml as 99.9% of the time you have a 7203fa chip set.
I have never had the ecu brick by making this small change, I have found it tends to brick when you flash a new rom on or you have made many changes.

I've never had one brick even when flashing a whole new ROM on there.
I did an E6 last week where I started to flash a 7202 ROM onto a 7203 processor and it stopped halfway through and left me with a few clicking relays behind the dash whenever the key was switched on. Swapped the xml, flashed the 7203 ROM and everything was fine and dandy again.

i never power anything down during the reflash if there are errors, phones, cars etc
look in your xml definition files (and the file it inherits from) if it fails after 2 tries. look at the mem section near the top and you will find h8539f in there. change it to h8539FA AND SAVE IT.
reflash again and all should be cool. if this is the only car your playing witht then leave it as it is, if not then dont forget to change it back
just an idea, try to read it out first, then open click the ROM INFO at the top of your map info you will find memory model info
