View Full Version : Using early evo tunerpro software

Just thought I would add this as a basic guide to how to upload maps and definition files and generally play about with the software.
Please note though that I accept no responsibility if you blow up your car by changing stuff that you know nothing about ;)
Firstly, upon opening tunerpro you will need to load up your ROM file and definition file
To open up a ROM file then you just use the 'File - Open Bin' in the menu options
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/Andyfox21/geekmapped/tunerpro%20tutorial/openbin.jpg
Now after you've opened the appropriate bin file you will notice that nothing much changes on the screen... this is because you don't have a definition file open. The definition file links the data in the ECU code to the values that we like to see and play with. In tunerpro, these are called XDF files and they have the same function as the XML files in ECUFlash.
So you then use the 'XDF - Select XDF' menu option to choose the definition file you're after
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/Andyfox21/geekmapped/tunerpro%20tutorial/openxdf.jpg
Now after you've opened the XDF file, you get the boxes on the left hand side of the screen filled with allsorts of things
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/Andyfox21/geekmapped/tunerpro%20tutorial/mapopen.jpg
You can then double click on any of the tables etc. and you can then hopefully see some values. The lo octane ignition timing table for my own car is shown in the one below
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/Andyfox21/geekmapped/tunerpro%20tutorial/ignitionopen.jpg
I'll continue this later on today with a bit more info on how to get the tables looking like mine with the colours and negative numbers etc.

Any more info Andy, it looks like the start of a great "How To" guide for the novices like myself
Especially useful are the screen shots, some info for loading and downloading maps would be great if poss :blushing:

Jim,
The loading of maps is covered above ;) The ROM files I mention are the actual ECU code that contains all of the maps etc. within them. The XDF file is what then tells the program where each particular map is stored within the ECU code.
As for downloading them onto the car then firstly you need to ensure that the Ostrich is connected to tunerpro.
The box at the bottom of tunerpro will show 'Hardware not connected' if it hasn't detected that anything is plugged into the PC. If that is the case and your Ostrich is plugged into your PC then you need to go to the tools menu and select 'Initialise attached hardware' as shown below
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/Andyfox21/geekmapped/tunerpro%20tutorial/Ostrichconnect.jpg
When the Ostrich is then attached, you can then either download the map that is installed on the car to tunerpro by using the download button as shown
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/Andyfox21/geekmapped/tunerpro%20tutorial/downloadmap.jpg
Or you can upload the map from tunerpro to the Ostrich (car) using the upload button like this
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h200/Andyfox21/geekmapped/tunerpro%20tutorial/uploadmap.jpg
However I would ALWAYS recommend that every time you've uploaded a map you then use the map verify button to just confirm that everything is all uploaded OK.

More to follow later ;)

The guides coming along great Andy, if you can keep updating when you get time I'd appreciate it
After having bought one of Pete's programmable ECU's when he was still at Autofixed (in the dim distant past  ) I am actually starting to teach myself how to reprogram the thing :>
I have now fixed up my Pocketlogger and bought a Palm Tungsten T3 of Ebay for a good price. I've read and reread the posts relating to the early Evo on here, the MLR and on the 4g63 site as well as following the links to the international sites too. I can now log and have a basic understanding of what is happening thanks to the Pocketlogger guide.
Thing is I now need a wideband sensor so I need some advice, should I go for the Innovate LC1 with a suitable gauge, or does the XD1 gauge add more features for future-proofing. The other option is at www.vems.us which appears to have an EGT sensor and gauge as well as the wideband AFR function. It also appears to datalog as well so does this look a better buy ?
I also need a suitable downpipe with an extra boss in it for the O2 sensor can anybody recommend a company to make one, I was thinking of going to Tube Torque in Macclesfield as they are local to me unless anyone can suggest another company ?
Any advice appreciated,

Hi Jim,
Apologies for not answering sooner but I must have missed this many times :blushing:
I use an Innovate LC-1 hooked up to a G3 gauge on my steering column.
PM Grant620 on here or the MLR for a good deal on them.
Tube Torque are good for their exhausts as well but instead of getting the downpipe remade why not just get a boss welded onto the decat pipe instead? Unless of course, you get a bigger downpipe at the same time ;)
I'll try and get some more info on the use of tunerpro put up this week as well.

Hi Andy,
How to tune example main fuel mapping let say at 1 bar boost?. Sorry this is my first day playing with ostrich and tunerpro.

Bes,
To tune the fuel map you need a wideband lambda sensor and also ideally a pocketlogger datalogger to monitor knock levels and the 'map' location values.
You then go out and do 3 x 3rd gear full throttle runs from say 2,500rpm - 7,000rpm and check what AFR you are getting. You then modify the values within the main fuel map to give you your target AFR's. I tend to aim to run AFR's around the 12.0 from around 3,500 onwards and then drop them down towards 11.5(ish) by around 6,000rpm.
However you also need to monitor knock levels as sometimes the car can handle a little bit more ignition advance with a richer fuel mixture.
Andy
Andy,
For 1 bar of boost which row from 1 to 14 that need to be modify. The row number 1 to 14 and the number in the cells in main fuel map are represent of what value? which row is for 1bar boost in that table roughly? Let say i get 12.5 AFR from 5k -7k rpm and I want to reduce to 11.5 AFR, which cell i need to modify. Previously I only have experiance tuning piggyback apexi SAFC Neo that only have 2D table but now this tunerpro using 3D table that I feel a bit difficult.

andy , if i were to have the evo 3 to tune , what do u recommend
1. ecu from an evo 8 on the evo III
2. the tuner pro software
3. is there a way to chip the evo III??
thnaks andy

It depends upon how much you want from it etc...
Obviously the code for the Evo8 ECU is written and tested etc. but I've been using the Ostrich and tunerpro and have a good grasp on the disassembly and so can write the code for quite a lot of things but getting time to do it etc. is a problem.
BTW, you can't just use the tunerpro software, you need to get your ECU socketed and then run an Ostrich Eprom emulator.
And yes, you can get various 'chips' for the E3 but if you run an Ostrich then it's better because then you can get the car mapped for your modifications and the fuel you use etc.

JimTube Torque was owned by me and is no more but Autofixed lives again so i can still do the exhausts

Hmm I pluged my computer to the Ostrich and installed tuner pro and some driver from moates. But I cant find anything in tuner pro that says that my device is pluged in. I have the ignition ON.
And also, why must i have a defination file, cant i load the file that is in the ECU someway ?

Plug USB into the ostrich. Then start tunerpro RT. It should autoconnect (it will display the Ostrich version and firmware version at the bottom in the status bar).
If it doesn't connect, go to Tools...Initialize Attached Hardware... (This option is available in Tunerpro RT v5 Beta - I guess something similar is in v4.14 or whatever the current "live" release is).

aha, My device does not show att all in the status bar.
And Initialize Attached Hardware is not an option at all.
Hmm so i must try the beta version..

WHat happens is when i connect ostrich to the computer. It "rings" in the computer and a icon shows next to the clock that a usb device is connected, but that icon dissapers fast. So i dont know if its a peoblem to get a connection from ostrich to computer.

So have you tried downloading the Beta 5 version which has the option to attach the hardware?
How old is the Ostrich - is there any chance the battery inside it is dead (although I'm not sure this would stop a computer from connecting)
AndyF

Initialise attached hardware has always been an option (even on the really early versions of tunerpro)
Have you installed all the correct drivers on the disk that came with the Ostrich? It sounds like your laptop might not be recognising the Ostrich.

I download this version of tunerpro today as I have been using older version for sometime now. Loaded my files up now problem went to start playing and I've noticed I can't add any negitive timing below -5.00 or advance timing over 30.00 on the main ignition maps.
Also the same with fuel maps as I can't go any richer then 11.00
Anyone got any idea's why its like there is set limits but on old tunerpro I could change what I wanted
Thanks kev

right click on the main ignition map in the left hand pane and go to Edit Parameter XDF Info. In the window that pops up, toward the middle right, is "Use Low Range" and "Use High Range". This is basically your limits, untick them or change to lower or higher.

Thanks mate ill give that ago later, Also another quickie. How do you set it up so when you doing a run it shows up on the tables which point you are at on timing and fuel etc
Hope you understand what I mean lol

There is a little A button above the map that you click to enable map tracing. It will only work if you have a late version 2.0 ostrich though.
